The need for insulation when dealing with exhaust systems is twofold. Firstly it may be necessary to retain heat in the exhaust gas in order to improve the operation of catalytic converters, diesel particle filters etc. The other requirement is where the aim is to protect vulnerable components from damage caused by exhaust heat, or where it is desired to minimise under-bonnet temperatures.
