Disposable Filters
For diesel vehicles which only spend short periods of time in confined spaces, a
disposable filter might be the best solution. These are typically clamped over the
tailpipe and contain an element which is simply replaced when it is full, rather
like an air filter.
Blackthorn offers two categories of disposable filter: low temperature and high
temperature. Low temperature disposable filters are ideal where vehicles are started
or moved within an enclosed environment, such as in a car factory or vehicle repair
workshop. They trap more than 99% of particulate matter and can also achieve reductions
in the hydrocarbon emissions which are responsible for the characteristic diesel
smell. However, they are not designed for situations where the engine is under load
or run at high RPM. Low temperature disposable filters typically need replacing
after about 100 starts, and the need for replacement is indicated by the exterior
becoming discoloured. As a safeguard to prevent excessive exhaust backpressure arising,
there is also a ‘rupture disk’ which bursts when exhaust backpressure exceeds a
certain threshold. Blackthorn can supply low temperature disposable filters suitable
for engines up to about 14 litres capacity.
In situations where engines need to be run under load in confined spaces, such as
during construction or demolition work, we offer a disposable filter made from glass
needlemat which is able to withstand any exhaust temperature likely to be encountered
with a diesel engine. The need for replacement is made apparent when the trapped
diesel particulate matter becomes visible on the outside. Blackthorn offers high
temperature disposable filters in three standard sizes suitable for most types of
construction machinery which are likely to be used in a confined space. We can also
design and supply bespoke pipework and heat shields which ensure that the operator
is protected from accidental contact with hot surfaces.
